The EESC has called for a European stimulus package for the labour market policy, amounting to 2% of GDP. We recognise that the "Compact for Growth and Jobs" adopted at the European Council summit in June 2012 is a first important step in that direction. This must be further fleshed out to create the needed room for manoeuvre for sustainable growth and employment across the Europe.

Today's conference is about a very important subject. Youth and employment are keys for Europe's future and competitiveness as well as for Europe's sustainability.
The huge challenge we are facing is to see how:
- First, we can help our young citizens onto the labour market.
- Second, on the same time we can avoid that the schemes we set up to this effect are abused.

The ninth edition of "Your Europe, Your Say!" (YEYS) took place on 15 and 16 March during the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH), an initiative to celebrate cultural heritage and bring it closer to citizens. The heading for the young people’s debates was: United in diversity: a younger future for European culture – can European youth take European culture to heart?
