Reaction by Employers' Group President Stefano Mallia on the State of the Union speech: European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen has defended the achievements of her executive in delivering life-saving COVID19 vaccines for over 70% of the EU population and provide the resources from NextGenerationEU for a historic recovery plan. But we not out of the woods. Many businesses (especially SMEs) are still suffering and continue to struggle to regain confidence. Now that most of the countries have their Recovery and Resilience plans approved, it is time to act!

At its July extraordinary meeting, the Employers' Group urged the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, to propose a Digital Rural Act (DRA).
A DRA would facilitate the development of digital technologies in agriculture and rural areas, thus improving the effectiveness of the Common Agriculture Policy and supporting the EU green deal and Farm to Fork strategies.
13 July 2021 – At last week's July plenary of the European Economic and Social Committee, the Employers' Group expressed the view that whilst the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan should serve as a useful guidance for Member States and the Union in their efforts towards competitiveness, growth, employment, structural reforms, productive investments and well-being of people, any such action must be taken at the right level of competence.
The Employers' Group of the European Economic and Social Committee welcomes the agreement to reshape international taxation rules to ensure a consensual system fit for the 21st century across the world.
The involvement of organised civil society and the EESC is crucial in ensuring the broad participation of citizens in the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE), highlighted Christa Schweng, president of the European Economic and Social Committee, at the inaugural Conference Plenary in Strasbourg on 19 June. Ms Schweng took part in the plenary along with a delegation of 18 EESC members.
We all have our own visions and ideas when we think about the future of Europe. For me and for the Employers' Group, this would be a prospering Europe that successfully recovers from the COVID-19 crisis, and leads the world in the green and digital transitions. It’s a future that can offer companies of all sizes the chance to become more productive,competitive, generate growth and create more jobs. It is also one where we can afford to offer each European Citizen a good quality of life.
The Employers´ Group takes note of the Porto Declaration, and the Porto Social commitment, and considers them, together with the NEXTGENERATIONEU recovery fund and the MFF, as a valuable roadmap to guide Member States and the Union in their efforts towards major structural reforms, productive investments, growth, competitiveness, employment and well-being of people.

First and foremost, I would like to express my satisfaction with the constructive work done with the other two rapporteurs, and the high-quality and well balanced result that we have achieved together.
The resolution "A New Narrative for Europe" that we are voting today, is a timely document which has the full force of the three groups behind it. It is a resolution through which we aim to send a strong political message in view of the upcoming launch of the Conference on the Future of Europe on Europe Day.
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the meeting of the Employers' Group.
Although you have already been very active and engaged in the work of our Committee – and you will also be participating in the next EESC plenary - I believe today is the first time that the Employers’ Group has the opportunity to exchange views with you directly.
The study "Boosting the use of Artificial Intelligence in Europe’s micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs)" will describe opportunities and challenges that AI presents to MSMEs. It focuses on five sectors (construction, accounting, legal service, health sector, agriculture) and five Member States (Romania, Italy, Ireland, France and Sweden). The study also aims to identifying concrete measures to encourage these enterprises uptake of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a means to increase their competitiveness.
The study is commissioned by the EESC on request of the Employers' Group and it is expected to be released in June 2021.
