Background

The opinion addresses Europe’s persistent innovation commercialisation gap: while the EU excels in research and patents, it struggles to turn scientific excellence into globally leading companies. 

Fragmented funding, uneven national rules, weak research-industry links and risk-averse investment conditions hinder startups and scale-ups, particularly in deep tech, which in most cases relocate abroad. 

The opinion explores how to support more coherent regulation, stronger cross-border ecosystems, and better access to finance, helping transform European research into market success and competitiveness.
