În Asia, CESE menține relații cu organizațiile societății civile din China, Japonia, Singapore, Coreea de Sud și Vietnam.

În prezent, există o masă rotundă a societății civile cu China; aceasta a fost instituită în 2007, după cea de-a 9-a reuniune la nivel înalt între UE și China, și se întrunește o dată pe an.

În februarie 2009 a fost instituit un comitet de monitorizare pentru Japonia pentru a urmări aspectele privind societatea civilă ale relațiilor UE-Japonia și a promova cooperarea dintre CESE și întreprinderile, lucrătorii, organizațiile de mediu, organizațiile consumatorilor și alte organizații importante ale societății civile organizate din Japonia. În cadrul Acordului de parteneriat economic UE-Japonia a fost instituit un grup consultativ intern UE-Japonia. Capitolul privind comerțul și dezvoltarea durabilă din acord acordă societății civile un rol de monitorizare și un rol consultativ.

UE a încheiat acorduri de liber schimb cu următoarele state asiatice:  Coreea de Sud (2011), Japonia (2019), Singapore (2019) și Vietnam (2020). Aceste acorduri se caracterizează prin includerea unor capitole privind comerțul și dezvoltarea durabilă și acordă CESE și altor organizații ale societății civile – împreună cu organizațiile societății civile din țările partenere – un rol oficial în monitorizarea punerii în aplicare a acordurilor și în consilierea autorităților politice competente relevante în domeniile standardelor sociale, de mediu și de muncă, dar și cu privire la alte aspecte care au o relevanță directă pentru societatea civilă, prin intermediul grupurilor consultative interne (GCI). În fiecare an au loc două sau trei reuniuni ale GCI ale UE, iar o dată pe an se desfășoară o reuniune comună.

În plus, CESE stabilește contacte cu societatea civilă din alte țări asiatice și se implică în evenimente internaționale relevante, de la caz la caz.

  • Meeting of the EU-Japan Follow-up Committee

    The EESC EU-Japan Follow-up Committee met the morning of 17 July. Items for discussion on the agenda were: the EU-Japan Relations in the post COVID-19 era and  Research and innovation. In addition to this, the Follow-up Committee assessed the current mandate period and reflected on future perspectives.

  • 3rd meeting of the EU DAG under the EU-Japan EPA

    During the meeting, the members of the Domestic Advisory Group (DAG) of the EU - composed of representatives of employers' organisations, trade unions and various interest groups -  followed up on the joint meetings with the Japanese counterparts that took place in Tokyo in January this year. They also discussed the work programme of the EU DAG and topics for future cooperation and dialogue.  Additionally, the members of the EU DAG exchanged views with representatives of the European Commission on matters related to the implementation of the trade and sustainable development chapter of the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).

    During the meeting, the composition of the presidency was confirmed. The Group discussed its mandate, and proposed topics ahead of the 2019 Civil Society Forum. Moreover, the EU DAG discussed with representatives of the EC matters related to the implementation of the EU-Korea FTA under three pillars of sustainable development.

    The 14th EU-China Civil Society Round Table took place in Brussels on 18 and 19 May 2016. Topics set up for discussion during this meeting of the Round Table were Innovation and economic development in rural areas, and Infrastucture and investment, in the framework of the One Belt One Road initiative and the establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). The aim of the discussions was to find common ground and exchange ideas and best practices.
