Sinds augustus 2020 treedt het autoritaire regime van Aleksandr Loekasjenko massaal op tegen maatschappelijke organisaties, onafhankelijke journalisten, bloggers en schrijvers in Belarus. Het EESC heeft een informatief rapport gepubliceerd over de situatie van de media in het land, waarin aanbevelingen worden gedaan over de wijze waarop Belarussische mediabedrijven en journalisten die het land zijn ontvlucht en degenen die zijn achtergebleven om tegen het regime te strijden, kunnen worden bijgestaan.
EESC-lid Tatjana Babrauskienė, rapporteur voor het rapport, die tijdens de EESC-zitting van mei het informatief rapport Ondersteuning van de onafhankelijke mediasector in Belarus uiteenzette, onderstreepte de belangrijke bijdrage van de aangewezen deskundige, de onafhankelijke Belarussische journaliste Hanna Liubakova, aan de algehele totstandkoming van het rapport en benadrukte: “Het is belangrijk om het ongelooflijke werk te erkennen van Belarussische journalisten, die heel vaak hun leven en gezinnen op het spel zetten alleen maar om ons de waarheid te vertellen. Wij zijn verplicht om hen te beschermen en te ondersteunen.”
Aangezien de situatie van de media in Belarus een Europese zaak is, stelt het EESC voor dat de lidstaten niet alleen samenwerking aangaan met onafhankelijke nieuwsagentschappen in Belarus, maar ook helpen bij de verspreiding van en berichtgeving over nieuws uit het land.
Het informatief rapport formuleert specifieke aanbevelingen en is een schoolvoorbeeld van steun voor mediavrijheid in een crisissituatie:
• vrijstelling van de visumplicht voor Belarussische journalisten die de onderdrukking willen ontvluchten;
• oprichting van EU- en nationale fondsen in de lidstaten ter ondersteuning van Belarussische vrije media en journalisten;
• juridische, financiële en psychologische steun voor journalisten die onderdrukt worden;
• integratie van Belarussische onafhankelijke journalisten in de lidstaten via banen of beurzen;
• verkrijging van financiële steun van de EU zonder bureaucratische rompslomp;
• IT-voorzieningen voor toegang tot internet en digitale instrumenten om censuur te omzeilen.
