L-attivitajiet tal-KESE li jikkonċernaw il-Ġirien tal-Lvant jinvolvu l-Armenja, l-Azerbajġan, il-Belarussja, il-Ġeorġja, il-Moldova u l-Ukrajna. L-għan ewlieni tal-KESE fir-rigward tal-Ġirien tal-Ewropa tal-Lvant huwa li jsaħħaħ ir-relazzjonijiet mal-organizzazzjonijiet tas-soċjetà ċivili fir-reġjun u li jinvolvihom fi djalogu kemm ma’ dawk li jfasslu l-politika nazzjonali kif ukoll mas-soċjetà ċivili organizzata tal-UE.
Il-mekkaniżmi ta’ kooperazzjoni ewlenin mal-Georgia, il-Moldova u l-Ukrajna huma l-Pjattaformi tas-Soċjetà Ċivili li jikkumplimentaw il-korpi politiċi eżistenti fi ħdan il-qafas tal-Ftehimiet ta’ Assoċjazzjoni tal-UE ma’ dawn il-pajjiżi. Il-Pjattaformi jippermettu lill-organizzazzjonijiet tas-soċjetà ċivili kemm tal-UE kif ukoll tal-pajjiż msieħeb biex jimmonitorjaw il-proċess ta’ implimentazzjoni u jħejju r-rakkomandazzjonijiet tagħhom lill-awtoritajiet rilevanti.
Min-naħa tal-UE, dawn il-Pjattaformi jinkludi membri tal-KESE kif ukoll rappreżentanti tan-netwerks Ewropej kbar tas-soċjetà ċivili. Min-naħa tal-pajjiżi sħab, dawn jirrappreżentaw firxa wiesgħa ta’ organizzazzjonijiet tas-soċjetà ċivili. Is-sħubija tal-Pjattaformi hija bbażata fuq rappreżentazzjoni bbilanċjata tal-gruppi interessati kollha (l-organizzazzjonijiet ta’ min iħaddem, it-trade unions u gruppi ta’ interessi varji).
Fi ħdan il-KESE, il-Kumitat ta’ Segwitu Ġirien tal-Lvant ġie stabbilit fl-2004 bħala korp dedikat tal-KESE responsabbli għar-relazzjonijiet mas-soċjetà ċivili fil-pajjiżi tal-Viċinat tal-Lvant. Il-Kumitat ta’ Segwitu normalment jiltaqa’ erba’ darbiet fis-sena u l-membri tiegħu jieħdu sehem attiv fl-attivitajiet tas-Sħubija tal-Lvant, bħalma huma l-pjattaformi multilaterali tas-Sħubija tal-Lvant u l-Forum tas-Soċjetà Ċivili tas-Sħubija tal-Lvant.
On 26 September, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) approved an own-initiative opinion to mark the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership (EaP). In this opinion, the EESC acknowledges the important achievements of this initiative, but also calls for further reforms in the areas of democratisation and fundamental freedoms. The opinion insists on the need to strengthen the role of civil society and to provide credible EU membership prospects to EaP states.
The 3rd meeting of the EU-Ukraine Civil Society Platform (CSP) held in Kyiv on 8-9 November focused on labour market regulation and antidiscrimination legislation and practices in Ukraine, as well as reviewed the progress of the reforms undertaken within the Association Agreement process. The 1st and inaugural meeting of the EU-Georgia Civil Society Platform (CSP) was held on 16th June 2016 in Tbilisi and was co-chaired by Andrzej Adamczyk, member of the EESC, and Kakha Gogolashvili, chairman of the Georgian National Platform at the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum. The 7th Joint Seminar of the European Economic and Social Committee and the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation (CCRF) will bring together EESC members and representatives of their Russian counterpart, representatives of the European Commission, experts and academics, to discuss cooperation in the areas of higher education and rural development. During four thematic sessions, participants will focus on EU-Russia cooperation in the fields of science, research and innovation; aligning higher education in the EU and Russia (the Bologna Process) and Erasmus+, on narrowing the gaps between rural and urban areas, and on cross-border cooperation for businesses and SMEs.
