Statement on Commission’s proposal on the amendment of the Climate Law
The European Economic and Social Committee welcomes the European Commission’s continued commitment to reducing the European Union’s net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels, as outlined in its proposed amendment to the EU Climate Law. This ambitious target is a crucial step to staying on course for the 55% reduction by 2030, and it is essential to securing a healthier, safer, and more sustainable future for all Europeans.
The European Economic and Social Committee has built a strong body of opinions on climate policy, consistently advocating for a European Union that is firmly committed to a climate-neutral and emission-free future.
In light of today’s complex economic, security, and geopolitical challenges, the European Economic and Social Committee believes it is vital for the European Union to position itself as a global leader in climate action. In this sense, the European Economic and Social Committee also underlines that this commitment is key to enabling a credible and ambitious updated Nationally Determined Contribution, thereby reinforcing its leadership role in global climate governance.
