The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Kommissionens nye initiativ til fremme af væksten af et marked for bæredygtigt flybrændstof er et skridt i den rigtige retning, men der er behov for en række ændringer for at sikre, at det kan gennemføres effektivt uden at skabe forvridninger. Dette er hovedbudskabet i udtalelsen om RefuelEU-forslaget for luftfart udarbejdet af Thomas Kropp og vedtaget på plenarforsamlingen i oktober.
"Det er uden tvivl rigtigt, at bæredygtige flybrændstoffer – forudsat at de produceres i tilstrækkelige mængder og er til rådighed for alle luftfartsselskaber – vil nedbringe sektorens CO2-emissioner betydeligt. Det er imidlertid ikke klart, om den strategi, som Kommissionen har valgt, vil forhindre konkurrenceforvridninger", bemærkede Thomas Kropp.
Luftfart er en international servicesektor, der betjener to særskilte markeder med forskellige markedsdynamikker: på den ene side EØS og det indre marked og på den anden side det marked, der reguleres af internationale regler. Kommissionens forslag bør klart afspejle denne forskel og sigte mod at opretholde lige konkurrencevilkår inden for EØS og proaktivt fremme anvendelige standarder for bæredygtighed på globalt plan.
Med hensyn til CO2-emissioner har Thomas Kropp udarbejdet en udtalelse om meddelelse vedr. ordningen for CO2-kompensation og -reduktion for international luftfart (CORSIA), som blev vedtaget på plenarforsamlingen i oktober. I dette dokument tilslutter EØSU sig Kommissionens forslag om ændring af direktiv 2003/87/EF for så vidt angår meddelelsen om kompensation i 2021 og støtter dets hurtige vedtagelse af hensyn til retssikkerheden.
