The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

EESO je odločno zavezan razogljičenju energetskega sistema EU ter poziva oblikovalce politik EU, naj se spoprimejo s posledicami večdesetletne energetske odvisnosti.
S temi besedami je predsednica EESO Christa Schweng odprla razpravo o energetskem prehodu in strateški avtonomiji EU na plenarnem zasedanju 26. oktobra 2022. EESO je gostil progesorja Leonarda Meeusa iz Evropskega univerzitetnega inštituta v Firencah.
„Prizadevati si moramo za zeleni prehod s hitrostjo, ki jo podjetja in družbe zmorejo, in s spremljevalnimi ukrepi, ki omogočajo konkurenčnost in inovacije Evrope v svetu“, je dejala ga. Schweng. „EU ima potencial, da z razvojem lokalnih zmogljivosti za obnovljive vire energije zmanjša svojo odvisnost od uvoza energije, vendar so za to potrebne ustrezne naložbene spodbude.“
Profesor Meeus je omenil reforme trga električne energije v EU, ki jih je predlagala Evropska komisija, in poudaril, da je trg z električno energijo, ki smo ga gradili v zadnjih 20 letih, lahko del naše prihodnosti, če ga dopolnjujemo in združujemo z novimi instrumenti za vključevanje potrošnikov in posodabljanje omrežij.
Razprava je bila povezana s sprejetjem mnenja Strateška vizija energetskega prehoda za strateško avtonomijo EU, ki so ga pripravili Thomas Kattnig, Lutz Ribbe in Tomasz Andrzej Wróblewski.
V mnenju je predstavljena vizija EESO o energetskem prehodu in njegova vloga pri doseganju strateške avtonomije EU s poudarkom na pospešitvi razogljičenja, zmanjšanju odvisnosti od uvoza energije, povečanju podpore skupnosti in podjetij pri tem prehodu ter podpori ranljivim gospodinjstvom. (mp)
