Het Europees Economisch en Sociaal Comité (EESC) roept de Europese Commissie op om haar nieuwe strategie voor gendergelijkheid snel ten uitvoer te leggen en daarmee de schadelijke gendergevolgen aan te pakken van de COVID-19-pandemie, die de bestaande sociale en economische ongelijkheden tussen vrouwen en mannen, het geweld tegen vrouwen en verschillende vormen van discriminatie jegens hen verder heeft vergroot.
“Door COVID-19 is het risico groter dat vrouwen te maken krijgen met geweld, armoede en verschillende vormen van discriminatie en dat ze economisch afhankelijk worden. De strategie moet snel ten uitvoer worden gelegd, om te voorkomen dat vrouwen de prijs van de pandemie blijven betalen”, aldus Giulia Barbucci, rapporteur voor het EESC-advies over gendergelijkheid, dat tijdens de julizitting van het EESC is goedgekeurd.
In dit advies dringt het EESC er bij de Commissie op aan rekening te houden met de negatieve gevolgen van de crisis voor gendergelijkheid en ervoor te zorgen dat alle lidstaten een genderperspectief opnemen in hun herstelmaatregelen.
De corapporteur voor dit advies, Indrė Vareikytė, benadrukt dat de media een grote rol spelen bij het creëren en in stand houden van clichés, die tot vooroordelen over vrouwen leiden en de ongelijkheid tussen de geslachten vergroten.
Het EESC pleit ervoor om in de volgende Gendergelijkheidsindex van het Europees Instituut voor gendergelijkheid (EIGE) een nieuw thematisch aandachtspunt – media en reclame – op te nemen, aldus Vareikytė. De media zelf zouden gedragscodes en andere maatregelen moeten vaststellen om seksisme en stereotypen uit te bannen. (ll)
