The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Huisvesting moet worden erkend als een grondrecht. Alle Europeanen, ook jongeren en kwetsbare groepen, moeten kunnen beschikken over adequate en duurzame huisvesting.
Deze krachtige oproep werd gedaan tijdens het huisvestingsforum van het EESC, dat voor het eerst werd gehouden tijdens de zitting op 5 december 2024. Na een debat met vooraanstaande sprekers werd een advies over huisvesting goedgekeurd.
EESC-voorzitter Oliver Röpke was ingenomen met de benoeming van Dan Jørgensen tot commissaris voor Energie en Huisvesting en met het historische besluit om in de nieuwe Commissie een speciale portefeuille voor huisvesting in het leven te roepen. “Huisvesting is een grondrecht en geen voorrecht. We kunnen niet accepteren dat kwetsbare groepen worden uitgesloten van deze basisbehoefte”, aldus Röpke. “Nu vrijwel elke lidstaat met een ernstige huisvestingscrisis kampt, is het dringend noodzakelijk betaalbare, duurzame en fatsoenlijke huisvesting voor iedereen te creëren.”
Bent Madsen, voorzitter van Housing Europe, riep op tot een nieuwe kijk op huisvesting als een levensbelangrijke infrastructuur voor de samenleving, net als gezondheidszorg en onderwijs, en zei: “Wij delen de mening van de nieuwe commissaris voor huisvesting dat onze aanpak gebaseerd moet zijn op waarden, regels en investeringen. Als publieke coöperatie en sociale woningcorporatie willen we laten zien hoe we onze burgers en onze samenlevingen de woningen kunnen bieden die zij nodig hebben.”
In het advies over Fatsoenlijke, duurzame en betaalbare sociale huisvesting in de EU, opgesteld door Thomas Kattnig en Rudolf Kolbe, erkent het EESC dat de huisvestingsmarkt tekortschiet. Dat moet worden aangepakt door de randvoorwaarden te verbeteren, zoals gegevens en coördinatie, goedkeuringsprocedures en regels voor ruimtelijke ordening, vast te leggen dat huisvesting een grondrecht is, voldoende financiële middelen te verstrekken, de “huisvesting eerst”-aanpak te volgen voor daklozen en meer aandacht te besteden aan duurzaamheid en aan de behoeften van jongeren.
