New impetus for Europe's Single Market and industrial policy

On 20 October 2023, the EESC hosted a public hearing on New impetus for Europe's single market and industrial policy, in conjunction with its exploratory opinion on the industrial strategy and the future of the Single Market, which was requested by the upcoming Belgian presidency.

The debate focused on the following questions:

  • We want the EU to be more competitive and improve its legislative process, but what benchmark can we set for our efforts?
  • Which Member States are "best in class" when it comes to the functioning of public services, industrial policies, digitalisation and sustainability? How can we foster a widespread adoption of the best practices in these areas?

The event opened with a keynote speech by Enrico Letta, former head of the Italian government and rapporteur for the High-Level Report on the future of the Single Market requested by the European Council on 30 June 2023. The event also featured DG GROW Head of unit Strategy and Regulation: Single Market and Industrial Policy Giulia Del Brenna and a host of representatives from civil society organisations.
