This online public hearing on carbon removal certification aims to take stock of current certification schemes, looking at different methodologies, and discuss what an EU-wide certification framework needs to provide for in practice to make it transparent, reliable and avoid greenwashing.
The EESC included a youth delegate in its UNFCCC COP delegation for the first time in 2021 and committed to repeating this experience in the years to come. The EESC youth delegate to COP has a mandate of two years and at the end of each mandate a transparent and open selection process is carried out to designate the new delegate. Originally focused on matters of security and defence, open strategic autonomy has expanded to encompass a wide range of policies from geopolitics, trade and economics (i.e. critical raw materials and supply chains) to technology, environment and climate, social and governance. However, the Member States still do not agree to what levels of ambition should strategic autonomy be pursued or how would the concept of strategic autonomy be defined. In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis and then with the war in Ukraine, all seem to agree that the EU should develop more capabilities to increase self-sufficiency.
Following the success of the previous Youth Climate and Sustainability Round Tables, the EESC, in cooperation with the European Youth Forum and Generation Climate Europe, will host the third EU Youth Round Table on Wednesday 30 November, between 14:30 and 16:00 CET.
On 28 November 2022 the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and ECOLISE will hold an event in the context of the annual Communities for Future Week, a week-long series of events at EU, national and regional levels that will explore how best to support ongoing work led by communities on climate change and sustainability in Europe.
As in the previous years, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will actively take part in the annual United Nations Framework on Climate Change – COP27, which this year will take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from 6 to 18 November 2022. This year's COP marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The Sustainable Development Observatory of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will host an online conference with the aim to assess the future development of photovoltaic systems and wind power plants and discuss how to build up the European renewable industry to avoid creating new dependencies.

The event aims to explore innovative ideas to foster opportunities and overcome challenges for the implementation of a transformative education for sustainable development.
On 15 September 2022, the EESC's Labour Market Observatory will hold a remote public hearing on The labour market in rural areas.
The EU's rural areas are home to 137 million people representing almost 30% of its population and over 80% of its territory. The hearing will examine labour market developments and trends in rural areas and the EU's actions in this area. Through a debate with civil society organisations and socio-professional stakeholders, the event will look at the current labour market opportunities and challenges in rural areas and discuss current recommendations in the field.
Speakers due to attend include representatives of the European institutions, Eurofound and the EESC, as well as the social partners and other civil society organisations.
As in previous years, the European Economic and Social Committee, as the body representing organised civil society in the EU, will be following the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, from Tuesday, 5 July, to Monday, 18 July 2022. The HLPF is the United Nations central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.
