In this opinion, the EESC is presenting several recommendations to mitigate the effects of the cost-of -living crisis. These include:

• investment in people and the economy, fair taxation, quality and affordable public services and  targeted support for the most vulnerable;
• short- and long-term industrial policy and efforts to boost competitiveness;
• stronger use of social dialogue, collective bargaining, and civil dialogue to address labour market challenges;
• wage and minimum wage increase as way of protection;
• more investments in  education as a powerful preventive tool against exclusion, marginalisation, and inequality

The EESC supports the proposal’s objective to ensure that all forms of sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children, including those enabled or facilitated by technological developments, are criminalised. It underlines the importance of having common minimum standards for the definition of criminal offences and the severity of related penalties in order to prosecute offenders effectively and to ensure the protection of victims across the EU.  The EESC calls for the international exchange of data relating to child sexual abuse and exploitation to be specifically regulated and for the possibilities for data retention to be expanded in all Member States with the development of an EU Research Centre.

In this own-initiative opinion, the EESC calls on the European Union to develop a coherent and uniform approach to protecting unaccompanied foreign minors in Europe. It urges the European Commission to draw up a Directive on the protection of unaccompanied minors that serves the best interests of the child. The principle of "the best interests of the child" should take precedence over all other national and international law. The EESC calls on the Member States to evaluate minority based on a body of evidence, consisting principally of the declarations by the person in question, civil status documents presented and interviews with the person. Given that bone tests are not really reliable, the EESC calls for them to simply be stopped.
