    The President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and its Group on Fundamental Rights and the Rule of Law express deep concern over the recently introduced Hungarian draft law titled “On Transparency in the Public Sphere.” It is our understanding that this bill poses a significant threat to the operations of civil society organisations and independent media in Hungary.

  • The 10th Western Balkans Civil Society Forum, held in Budva and hosted by the EESC, reaffirmed the central role of civil society in the EU enlargement process. Montenegro’s hosting of the Forum signalled its ambition to lead the region as a frontrunner, aiming to close all negotiation chapters by 2026 and join the EU by 2028. The Forum focused on the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights, and the future of civic space and social dialogue.

  • EESC President Oliver Röpke opened his mission to Montenegro by encouraging the country’s ambition to join the EU by 2028 and close all negotiation chapters by 2026. In a meeting with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and other high-level officials in Podgorica, the President reinforced the EESC’s strong support for Montenegro’s frontrunner role in the enlargement process and its efforts to strengthen democratic dialogue and reform.

    Today, on Europe Day, we celebrate the peace, unity, and shared values that bind our continent together. It is a moment to reflect on the achievements of the European project—how far we’ve come in strengthening democracy, human rights, and cooperation across borders.

  • On 16 April 2025, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) took part in the Informal EPSCO Equality Ministerial Meeting, held under the Polish Presidency at the Warsaw Citadel. EESC President Röpke used the occasion to reinforce the Committee’s commitment to Roma inclusion and gender equality, while calling for stronger EU action against disinformation and systemic discrimination.

  • At the Informal EPSCO Social Policy Council held this week in Warsaw, European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) President Röpke made a strong political call for Europe to deliver on its promises of fairness, dignity and rights in the digital and demographic transitions. The two-day event, hosted by the Polish Presidency and Minister Dziemianowicz-Bąk, convened EU ministers for Employment and Social Affairs, social partners, and institutional leaders, including Executive Vice-President Mînzatu.

  • EESC President Röpke met on 10 April 2025 with European Commissioner for International Partnerships Síkela and the Presiding Officer of the African Union's Economic, Social and Cultural Council (AU ECOSOCC), Sissoko, to reinforce joint efforts in enhancing civil society engagement in the EU-Africa partnership.
