The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Evropski ekonomsko-socialni odbor (EESO) je v nedavnem mnenju podprl načrt Evropske komisije REPowerEU, s katerim naj bi se EU rešila odvisnosti od ruskega plina in nafte. Vendar je opozoril, da bi se številnim težavam, ki jih je treba zdaj nujno reševati, izognili ali jih bolje obvladali, če bi že davno zmanjšali odvisnost od uvoza energije in dokončali energetski trg, k čemur poziva že leta.
EESO je v mnenju, ki ga je sprejel na septembrskem plenarnem zasedanju, pripravili pa so ga Stefan Back, Thomas Kattnig in Lutz Ribbe, poudaril, da bodo povezani gospodarski in socialni učinki sedanje krize omajali demokratični sistem EU, če ne bodo najdene ustrezne rešitve. Potrebni so takojšnji ukrepi za zagotovitev zanesljive oskrbe z energijo po čim bolj ugodnih cenah za potrošnike in industrijo, ki jih je prizadelo sedanje drastično zvišanje cen. V nasprotnem primeru bodo nastali socialni nemiri.
EESO meni, da je načrt REPowerEU korak v pravo smer, vendar opozarja, da ti izredni ukrepi ne smejo privesti do novih odvisnosti in ne smejo škodovati prizadevanjem za čimprejšnje doseganje podnebne nevtralnosti.
Komisija bi morala pred sklenitvijo partnerstev z nedemokratičnimi ali politično nestabilnimi državami razviti geopolitično strategijo za uvoz energije, v kateri bi upoštevala tudi izredne razmere, povezane z energijo in podnebjem.
EESO meni, da je zaradi nujnega zagotavljanja zanesljive oskrbe potrebna prožnost pri začasni uporabi fosilnih goriv in goriv z nizkimi emisijami. (mp)
