The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

U nedavno objavljenom mišljenju EGSO podržava plan REPowerEU Europske komisije da se EU odmakne od ruskog plina i nafte, ali ističe da su se mnogi problemi koji se sada hitno rješavaju mogli već davno izbjeći ili suzbiti smanjenjem ovisnosti o uvozu energije i dovršenjem energetskog tržišta, na što EGSO već godinama poziva.
U mišljenju, koje su sastavili Stefan Back, Thomas Kattnig i Lutz Ribbe i koje je usvojeno na rujanskom plenarnom zasjedanju, Odbor je naglasio da će, ne pronađu li se rješenja, kombinacija ekonomskih i socijalnih posljedica trenutne krize demokratski sustav EU-a izložiti pritisku. Da ne bi došlo do socijalnih nemira, treba smjesta poduzeti mjere kako bi se osigurala opskrba po cijeni „što pristupačnijoj“ za potrošače i industrijski sektor, na koje utječe sadašnja cjenovna kriza.
EGSO tvrdi da je plan REPowerEU korak u pravom smjeru, ali upozorava da te hitne mjere ne smiju dovesti do novih ovisnosti niti naštetiti naporima da se što prije postigne klimatska neutralnost.
Komisija bi prije sklapanja partnerstava s nedemokratskim ili politički nestabilnim zemljama trebala razraditi geopolitičku strategiju uvoza energije u kojoj se vodi računa o hitnim energetskim i klimatskim pitanjima.
Po mišljenju Odbora, hitna potreba za osiguravanjem opskrbe iziskuje fleksibilnost u pogledu privremenog korištenja fosilnih goriva i goriva s niskim emisijama. (mp)
