Cé go bhfuil stádas fós ag an Aontas Eorpach mar an áit is sábháilte d’iriseoirí ar domhan, d’fhéadfadh sé sin athrú go héasca toisc go bhfuil an treocht atá ann faoi láthair maidir le himeaglú, ciapadh agus fiú marú tuairisceoirí ag dul i méid.
Is é an t-iriseoir iniúchta, Matthew Caruana Galizia, aoi na míosa seo. Dúnmharaíodh a mháthair, Daphne Caruana Galizia, go brúidiúil in 2017 i ngeall ar na hiarrachtaí a bhí á ndéanamh aici chun éilliú i Málta a nochtadh.
Dúirt Julie Majerczak, ceann oifige Tuairisceoirí gan Teorainneacha sa Bhruiséil, nach raibh dúnmharuithe iriseoirí ach taobh amháin den scéal (dúnmharaíodh 16 dhuine acu ó 2015 i leith). Tá siad thíos le cineálacha éagsúla brú, mí-úsáide agus cinsireachta níos mó ná riamh. D’iarramar ar Christian Moos, comhalta de CESE, cén tábhacht a bhaineann le saoirsí na meán a chosaint don Aontas Eorpach.
An bhfuil rud éigin ar cheart don Aontas Eorpach a dhéanamh agus ar cheart smachtbhannaí buiséadacha a chur i bhfeidhm ar rialtais a chuireann guthanna criticiúla ina dtost agus srian ar shaoirsí an phreasa? Éist lenár n-eachtra is déanaí ‘Gan saoirse na meán, ní féidir daonlathas a bheith ann’ chun a fháil amach cad a bhí le rá ag ár n-aíonna.
