The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

EU er nødt til løbende at tilpasse den europæiske transport til nuværende og fremtidige behov, navnlig i lyset af ændringerne i efterspørgslen og tendensen til øget omsætning i havnene. De vigtigste elementer skal være multimodalitet og intelligent søfart, så fordelene ved de forskellige transportformer udnyttes optimalt for at opnå de bedst mulige resultater, samtidig med at sikkerheden øges, og miljøbelastningen reduceres.
Det er den overordnede besked i den udtalelse, som Mateusz Szymański har udarbejdet, og som blev vedtaget på EØSU's plenarforsamling i januar om Kommissionens meddelelse om "NAIADES III: Fremme af en fremtidssikret transport ad indre vandveje i Europa".
I forbindelse med mødet sagde Mateusz Szymański: "NAIADES III er en vigtig handlingsplan. EØSU støtter bestræbelserne på at øge andelen af transport ad indre vandveje inden for passager- og godstransport. Der er et enormt potentiale på dette område, som endnu ikke er frigjort. Vi har brug for politisk vilje og engagement på mange niveauer for at mobilisere støtteforanstaltninger til udvikling og vedligeholdelse af infrastruktur og til fremme af karrieremuligheder i sektoren for transport ad indre vandveje. TEN-T-nettet skal også opdateres for at kunne modsvare de nye tendenser på transportområdet." (mp)
