The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

For første gang siden undertegnelsen af handels- og samarbejdsaftalen mellem EU og UK gav Michel Barnier, chef for Kommissionens Taskforce for Forbindelserne med UK, offentligt udtryk for sit syn på teksten under en debat på Det Europæiske Økonomiske og Sociale Udvalgs plenarforsamling i januar.
I sin tale understregede Michel Barnier, at der ikke er noget positivt ved brexit: "Der er tale om en skilsmisse, og ingen bør være glade efter en skilsmisse. Den aftale, vi har indgået med UK, beviser imidlertid, at EU ikke er et fængsel, som visse demagoger til højre og venstre ellers vil have os til at tro. Det er muligt at forlade Unionen, men dem, der ønsker dette, er nødt til at leve med konsekvenserne i form af forvridninger og turbulens".
Formålet med aftalen var at få styr på de økonomiske og handelsrelaterede aspekter af forbindelserne mellem EU og UK efter brexit, vel vidende at aftalen ikke udgør et slutpunkt: "Det vil ikke kun være nødvendigt at sikre en korrekt gennemførelse af aftalen. Fremover vil den også skulle udbygges med visse områder, som UK ikke ønskede at inkludere i denne omgang såsom forsvar og udenrigspolitik".
Michel Barnier understregede også, at Kommissionens arbejde ikke var afsluttet: Kommissionen vil overvåge gennemførelsen af aftalen og holde et vågent øje med ethvert forslag fra britisk side, der kan resultere i lovgivningsmæssige afvigelser.
EØSU's formand, Christa Schweng, takkede Michel Barnier for indsatsen i brexitforhandlingerne og for hans "eksemplariske åbenhed og den tid, der blev afsat til at holde civilsamfundet orienteret under hele forhandlingsprocessen", hvor han fem gange talte i forbindelse med EØSU's plenardebatter.
Jack O'Connor, formand for EØSU's brexit-opfølgningsgruppe, roste Michel Barniers håndtering af situationen i Irland under brexitforhandlingerne og mindede om tilsagnet fra EØSU og brexit-opfølgningsgruppen om at " leve op til vores rolle i bestræbelserne på at optimere potentialet i denne aftale", navnlig i forhold til civilsamfundet i UK.
