Background
Humanoid robots are a new technology linked to the development of physical AI, and they have been gaining importance in cutting-edge sectors. European companies are engaged in a veritable race to create and build these robots.
Europe has missed many technological opportunities, failing to consider their rapid development and global adoption, but there is still the opportunity to remain competitive in AI and humanoid robots. The prospects of the development of this technology are even more interesting considering the challenges linked to an aging population and initiatives to reskill our workforces.
This opinion will look into the state of play of the development of this technology in Europe and globally, and assess what are the main difficulties and opportunities for EU industries to take the lead on this front.
However, the questions connected to the legal, ethical and moral implications of the use of these robots will also be addressed, as well as the challenges that the deployment of this technology might impose on workers.
The EESC will provide concrete recommendations to enable our industries to compete on a level playing field with other continents on this technology, while respecting the necessary balance to preserve our societal, legal and ethical values.
