The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Evropski ekonomsko-socialni odbor (EESO) je sprejel stališče o gospodarskih prednostnih nalogah EU za leto 2021. Pozdravlja, da se v strategiji, ki jo je predlagala Evropska komisija, obravnavajo izzivi v zvezi s pandemijo COVID-19 v okviru evropskega zelenega dogovora, a je razočaran, ker se premalo pozornosti namenja socialnim vprašanjem. EESO poleg tega svari pred prezgodnjim opuščanjem podpornih ukrepov in se zavzema za uvedbo novih fiskalnih pravil, ki bi upoštevala družbeno in gospodarsko stvarnost po koncu pandemije.
EESO je razočaran, ker se v gospodarski strategiji, ki jo je predlagala Komisija in je letos dopolnjena tudi s smernicami glede izvajanja mehanizma za okrevanje in odpornost, premalo pozornosti namenja socialnim vprašanjem. Gre za pristop, ki ne bo zagotovil doslednega in dolgo pričakovanega izvajanja evropskega stebra socialnih pravic, poleg tega pa bo ogrozil pravični prehod na zeleno in digitalno gospodarstvo. Ta prehod ne sme povzročiti nadaljnjega naraščanja revščine in poglabljanja socialne izključenosti, opozarja EESO.
Ta pomislek je EESO izrazil v sklepih iz svojega mnenja o letni strategiji za trajnostno rast 2021, sprejetega 24. februarja.
Poročevalec za mnenje Krzysztof Balon je zapisal: „Ključno bo poskrbeti za to, da bodo koristi gospodarskega okrevanja enakomerno porazdeljene, kar bo prispevalo ne le k večji socialni pravičnosti, temveč tudi k stabilizaciji povpraševanja, kar je pogoj za gospodarsko okrevanje.“ (na)
