During its mission to Japan this year, the EU-Japan Follow-up Committee will build on its former work in order to further strengthen its cooperation with its well-established network of organisations.

Several bilateral meetings with economic and social stakeholders and Japanese authorities will take place, and a roundtable discussion will be organised on "Circular economy – what needs to be done?".

In relation to the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), the Follow-up Committee will pave the way for the work of the Domestic Advisory Groups (DAGs) under the trade and sustainable development chapter of the EPA and take part in the first Joint Dialogue with civil society in the framework of the same agreement. It will also measure the preliminary benefits of the agreement as a whole.

The EESC trainees with the support of the Sustainable Development Observatory (SDO) and the Directorate B for Legislative Works will host a public meeting aimed at offering a comprehensive approach to biodiversity in day-to-day life by engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and, in particular, youth.

During the meeting, the members of the EU Domestic Advisory Group (EU DAG), composed of representatives of employers' organisations, trade unions and various interest groups, will adopt its rules of procedure and confirm the composition of the EU DAG. Discussions will also take place on the preparation of the participation of the EU DAG in the Joint Dialogue with Civil Society, which will be organised in Tokyo on 31 January in the framework of the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).

This event will provide examples of circular economy (CE) good practices and a forum for discussion to help CE practitioners deal with challenges they come up against. It will demonstrate solutions from industry to tackle climate change, and show examples of approaches to Circular Economy taken at a company level.

At this event, different stakeholders will discuss the need of a fair and just transition and a European Green Deal that leave no one behind. This transition means that the most vulnerable members of society, as well as regions and territories that are in the need of special consideration, have to be involved in decision-making. These aspects will be addressed by the panellists in an interactive discussion.

During the meeting, the EU DAG will discuss the progress achieved by both Parties to the Agreement concerning the ILO Core Conventions as well as the next steps in their ratification and effective implementation. The EU DAG also will exchange information about the role of civil society in the EU and the Republic of Korea with a representative of the European Commission.
