Circular Economy Stakeholder Conference | Towards a new normal: Sustainable products for sustainable consumption

Scope and objetives

On 1 and 2 March 2022, the European Economic Social Committee (EESC) and the European Commission (EC) will host the 2022 European Circular Economy Stakeholder Conference. This year's conference will bring together Europe's largest network of stakeholders in the Circular Economy with a focus on the path to a new normal: sustainable products for sustainable consumption.

The French EU Council Presidency plays a key role in advancing the Circular Economy so we are delighted that the Presidency is joining us to host this flagship stakeholder conference, bringing together leaders from business, public authorities, NGOs, knowledge communities, and other civil society organisations to advance our transition to a Circular Economy.

  • Day 1 of the Conference (1 March 2022) will be hosted by the European Commission. The debate will include a focus on the main upcoming milestones in the implementation of the Circular Economy Action Plan and the plenaries will discuss next steps in moving to a joint agenda on sustainable products, as well as setting the scene for the new policy milestones to boost sustainable consumption. In the afternoon, the technical parallel sessions will discuss, i.a., scaling up circular economy for ambitious climate objectives, and biobased and biodegradable plastics. You will be able to follow the plenary sessions and parallel sessions, broadcast live from Commission’s Charlemagne building in Brussels (with speakers and moderators on stage).

  • Day 2 of the Conference (2 March 2022), will be hostedy by the EESC and will brings together perspectives from civil society organisations, with a focus on the practical implementation of the current and ongoing circular economy policy framework by employers, trade unions and other civil society organisations. The morning schedule features the now traditional parallel workshops highlighting the work done by the Platform's Leadership groups.

Eight participatory workshops on circular topics will showcase successes and identify new challenges for the circular transition:

In addition to the sector-focused workshops, there will be opportunities to discuss, network and explore examples of how the circular transition happens in practice.

The afternoon will start with highlights from the morning workshops followed by a session on biodiversity and climate as well as the Circular Economy in practice.

Context

The European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform is an initiative of the European Commission and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). The annual conference is the main event of the Platform. Now in its 5th edition, the European Commission and the EESC have partnered up with the French EU Council Presidency to organize the 2022 edition.

The purpose of the Platform is to provide a "network of networks" to support a stakeholder-driven transition from a linear to a circular economic model. There are three pillars to this platform:

This year's Conference will build on the success of the previous editions. Due to the current epidemiologic situation in Belgium, the 2022 Conference will be online.
