We can no longer waste any of our time. We want a responsible and supportive Europe, respectful of human rights. We want a Europe that knows how to welcome diversity in an organised way and make it a truly enriching experiencing. Because on the banknotes we handle every day there are no walls but bridges, no closed ports but open doors and windows, symbolising the European spirit of openness and cooperation.
Congratulations to Ms von der Leyen! Europe is a woman indeed! The courage and boldness of your actions will set the pace of what you called an EU that strives for more. There is no other way than the one to dream and provide a Sustainable Europe for future generations.
The President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), Luca Jahier is in Shanghai for the 17th meeting of the EU-China Round Table, bringing together the EESC and the China Economic and Social Council (CESC).
Dear President, Dear David, I would like to congratulate you on your election as President of the European Parliament, the institution that best represents our European democracy. In your inauguration speech, you illustrated a vision that I fully endorse.
Dear President, Dear Mr Michel, I would like to congratulate you on your appointment as the President of the European Council. "They [the Catholics] are not to be trusted. They do not belong here." Just back from Ireland, the voice of a mother resonates in my mind, pointing out just how fragile peace is in a place that once, not so long ago, was devastated by religious divisions and psychological borders. The mother has since changed her mind after participating in the EU-funded PEACE programme, but her words are a strong reminder that Brexit can reignite past discord.
Finland assumes today, for the third time in its history, the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. We all agree there is no other alternative than accelerate sustainability. The faster the transition, the better it will be for prosperity and democracy in Europe. I strongly welcome the clear message from President Antti Rinne “A key priority of Finland’s Presidency is the EU’s global leadership in climate action.”
The President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), Luca Jahier will visit Belfast and Bangor on 25-26 June to discuss the future of Northern Ireland beyond Brexit. Mr Jahier is the only President of an EU institution to visit Northern Ireland since the 2016 referendum on UK withdrawal from the EU.
The European Economic and Social Committee welcomes the decision taken on 21 June 2019, at the centenary International Labour Conference, to adopt two new instruments - a convention and a recommendation - to combat violence and harassment at work.
As EESC President, I welcome the new strategic agenda for 2019-2024 adopted on Thursday by the European heads of state and government. There is no other alternative than to strengthen the role of the European Union in an increasing volatile and unsettled changing world. At the last European elections, citizens have given us five years to build the Europe of tomorrow. We cannot waste this new chance and deliver business-as-usual.
Quote of the day
We can no longer waste time to find a solution on migration. Saving the lives of those who flee from atrocious wars, hunger and disease, is a human, moral and legal duty.
