Programme Brochure launching event: "Financial Education and Financial Inclusion"
2013 is an exciting year for ‘Your Europe, Your Say!’ – the annual event that brings school pupils and their teachers to the heart of Europe to put their views to European Union decision-makers. Why? Because 2013 is the European Year of Citizens.
The need for a better mix of academic and vocational education and training
The percentage of students in universities is by many seen as a measure of modernity and progress. However, universities alone cannot ensure economic growth and social inclusion. We need a stronger focus on how to balance education and training systems; exploring the right mix between general, vocational and academic provisions. Post secondary vocational education and training illustrates the challenges involved in balancing education and training policies and systems.
The EESC is currently preparing an own-initiative opinion on the Post-secondary Vocational Education and Training as an Attractive Alternative to Higher Education. In this context a hearing took place on 12 July 2011, were the representatives of the European Commission, European Training Foundation, CEDEFOP as well as social partners the views on the development of VET. Experts from Germany and the Czech Republic presented the VET systems in their countries.
This hearing is very timely as all seven flagship initiatives of the Europe 2020 initiative have been launched, including "Youth on the Move" and the "Agenda for New Skills and Jobs", both of which have vocational education and training at their heart.
