The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

The EESC has six sections, specialising in concrete topics of relevance to the citizens of the European Union, ranging from social to economic affairs, energy, environment, external relations or the internal market.

Kommissionen bør arbejde videre med at vurdere konsekvenserne af de nye 5G- og 6G-teknologier på tværs af en lang række sektorer. Der er behov for værktøjer og foranstaltninger til at vurdere risici og sårbarheder. I udtalelsen udarbejdet af Dumitru Fornea og vedtaget på plenarforsamlingen i oktober indtager EØSU et klart standpunkt og bemærker, at der er behov for at afklare de sociale, sundhedsmæssige og miljømæssige spørgsmål med inddragelse af borgerne og alle relevante aktører, selv om debatten om udrulningen af 5G-nettet er blevet til en kontroversiel og politisk diskussion.
I forbindelse med plenarforsamlingen bemærkede Dumitru Fornea: Den hastige digitalisering og udvikling af elektronisk kommunikation har voldsomme konsekvenser for økonomien og for samfundet som helhed. Gennem en ansvarlig anvendelse af disse teknologier, har menneskeheden en historisk chance for at skabe et bedre samfund. Men uden behørig omhu og demokratisk kontrol risikerer vores samfund imidlertid at stå over for alvorlige udfordringer med administrationen af disse teknologiske systemer i fremtiden".
Pandemien har vist, at den elektroniske kommunikationsinfrastruktur spiller en vigtig rolle i samfundet og kan forbedre borgernes livskvalitet kraftigt med en direkte effekt på fattigdomsbekæmpelsen. Der er dog behov for løbende at vurdere potentielle farer. EØSU anbefaler derfor, at der afsættes europæiske og nationale midler til mere dybtgående tværfaglig forskning og konsekvensanalyser med fokus på både mennesker og miljø samt til formidling af disse resultater med henblik på at oplyse befolkningen og beslutningstagerne.
