The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

I en initiativudtalelse, der blev vedtaget på EØSU's plenarforsamling i oktober, opfordrede EØSU til, at mobilitet anerkendes som en individuel rettighed og et offentligt gode, der skal være tilgængeligt for alle.
I EØSU's udtalelse, som er udarbejdet af Kristina Krupavičienė og Dovilė Juodkaitė, understreges det, at bæredygtig mobilitet er med til at sikre EU's grønne genopretning: En miljø- og brugervenlig offentlig transport kan blive en reel drivkraft i genopretningen efter covid-19.
"Pandemien har fungeret som en katalysator, idet den har vist, at offentlig transport er en væsentlig tjeneste i offentlighedens interesse, navnlig når det drejer sig om at give frontlinjearbejdere og sårbare grupper adgang til job og tjenester", udtalte Kristina Krupavičienė.
Ifølge EØSU har EU brug for strategier til at opgradere mobiliteten og forbedre den offentlige transport, så den bliver mere attraktiv og lettere tilgængelig for borgerne, navnlig for dem med lave indkomster.
Offentlig transport kan spille en central rolle i Europas genopretning efter pandemien: Den kan bidrage til at løse klimaproblemer og kan samtidig højne borgernes livskvalitet, da den gør det nemmere for dem at komme på arbejde og have et aktivt socialt og kulturelt liv. At opnå bæredygtig mobilitet kræver imidlertid et stærkt politisk engagement fra alle aktører og på alle niveauer.
"Vi opfordrer Kommissionen til at fastsætte målbare og ambitiøse mål for at fremme omstillingen fra privatbiler til kollektiv transport og aktiv mobilitet, og vi tilskynder EU og medlemsstaterne til at bidrage til omstillingen til grønnere transportformer ved at gøre disse transportformer mere attraktive overordnet set", tilføjede Dovilė Juodkaitė.
