    Members of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) attended a conference with the title Access to land for farmers in the EU, organised by the European Green party and taking place on 7 December in Brussels at the EESC headquarters and at the European Parliament.

     

     

     

  • On 7 December 2016, Javier Doz, EESC member and rapporteur for the opinion on the Anti-Money Laundering Directive (AMLD), took part in the AML conference on Addressing policy challenges in Financial crime: Fin-Tech and information sharing. The event was held in Brussels and organised by Anti-Money Laundering Europe (AME) and the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI).

  • The Workers' Group organised a cultural event for the presentation of a book by Bernard Thibault, former General Secretary of the CGT of France, entitled "La troisième guerre mondiale est sociale" (The Third World War is a Social War).

  • Officious transposition of the EU law at the national level undermines Single Market, increases costs and hinders development. Numerous governments of Member States use transposition process as an opportunity to address domestic political issues which results with "goldplating". This unfavorable tendency has negative impact on business and should be avoided by all possible means. Good regulation, consistent and stable legal framework, both at the national and the European level is what business counts on - these are some of the conclusions of the conference "Transposition of the European law – the key challenge to business activity", that took place on 6 December 2016 in Zagreb, Croatia.

  • On 5 December, Georges Dassis, President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), will speak at the meeting on The social dimension of the European Union jointly organised by the European Parliament's information office in Cyprus, the Representation of the European Commission to Cyprus and the Cypriot members of the European Economic and Social Committee. In the course of the meeting, Zeta Emilianidou, Minister for Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance, will take part in an open debate.

  • EESC member Petru Sorin Dandea, rapporteur for the opinions ECO/405 and ECO/407, speaker at a conference "Towards a common EU tax policy in favour of the green energy sector", organised by the European Commission and Civil society organisations, in Brussels.

     

     

  • On 30 November 2016, the ECO President, Joost van Iersel, attended a presentation and a discussion of a report on the outcome of the Eurochambers' questionnaire distributed among 50.000 European companies, mostly small- and medium-sized. The meeting was hosted by the Union of Chambers of Turkey.

  • Mr García del Riego, rapporteur for the EESC opinion on "Promoting innovative and high growth firms", and ECO section president Mr van Iersel, contributed to the policy debate with the position of organised civil society.

  • "The key role of the social economy in responding to societal challenges is clear: in these times of economic crisis, the social economy sector has been extremely resilient, namely by creating jobs, especially because it is a sector where social innovation can express itself fully ", declared the EESC president at the opening of the conference on The Social Economy as a key player in providing effective answers to current societal challenges in the EU and the world.

  • On the 29th of November president Dassis met with the head of the Moroccan government, Abdel-Ilah Benkirann. Among other things, the topic of discussion included underlining the importance of civil society participation in the political dialogue and the value of consultative institutions.
