Study on the future evolution of civil society in the European Union

BACKGROUND

Civil society plays a crucial role in societal and political development, creating the political and social space for collaborations that are based on the core values of trust, service and the collective good.

The role of civil society organisations (CSOs) has evolved significantly and will continue to change in the future. Their capacity to contribute to political and societal development will rely on diverse factors, including funding, technological developments and the increasing role of social media.

Within this context, it is useful to reflect on the future scenarios affecting civil society. In particular the study will:

  • analyse the main challenges for CSOs at national and European level, identifying the trends and drivers of change;
  • develop possible 2030 scenarios for civil society organisations;
  • investigate the impact of these scenarios on the relations between CSOs and institutions at national and EU level.

Languages/geographical area

The study should be carried out in English and be representative of the EU Member States in terms of geographical balance and EU membership.
