COMMUNICATING MIGRATION

10th EESC Civil Society Media Seminar, 24-25 November, Vienna, Diplomatic Academy

The EESC Communications Department is organising its 10th Civil Society Media seminar on "Communicating Migration", focusing on the communication aspects in the context of migration, refugees and integration.

The aim of the event is to discuss and debate how communication tools and the media have been instrumental in telling the story of migration into and across Europe.  The event will bring together communications and media representatives of the EESC's host organisations, EESC members, National Economic and Social Committees and similar bodies, other EU institutions, journalists and journalist organisations.

The EESC and the EU-Russia Civil Society Forum are organising their 3rd joint seminar, on 23 November 2016, in Versailles. The objective of the seminar is to discuss topics of common interest for European and Russian civil society. On the agenda this year will be questions such as the current situation in which civil society in Russia and in the EU are operating, and questions relating to migration, specifically focusing on good practices and experiences in integrating newcomers into host societies.

In 2016 the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), the French Committee for Sustainable Development (Committee 21 France - C21F) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) decided to work together to create a new international coalition on climate dedicated to multilevel and multi-stakeholder governance.

The EESC-ILO Conference on the Future of Work will be held in the framework of the global consultation called for by the ILO. Organised jointly with the EESC, the event will serve to identify the key challenges and opportunities related to the Future of Work in the EU context. In debating with EESC members, this event aims at providing input for future initiatives by the EESC as well as contributing to the ILO global initiative on the Future of Work. Drawing on the work of the ILO and the EESC, this Conference will ultimately strengthen the solid and long standing cooperation between the two institutions which share a number of values and principles.

This High-Level conference is part of the ILO global initiative on the Future of Work built upon the views of social partners and civil society.

COP22: it's Action time

The COP22 side event co-organised by the EESC and the Climate Chance Association will serve to support the pledge made by the non-state actors to take their share of responsibility and continue building coalitions gathering all stakeholders involved in key areas in the spirit of a multi-stakeholder and multi-level governance based on transparency, inclusiveness and shared thinking.

The EESC is currently working on an opinion on the proposal on extending EFSI. In the framework of the elaboration of the opinion, the Section for Economic and Monetary Union and Economic and Social Cohesion (ECO) organised on 10 November 2016 from 10 a.m. a public hearing on The extension of the duration of the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI 2.0).

The first Cork Declaration, adopted on 9 November 1996, forthrightly requested "a fairer balance" of public spending and investments between rural and urban areas. In the new Cork 2.0 Declaration adopted on 6 September 2016, there is only one concrete proposal with the potential to have a meaningful impact: the so called "rural proofing" whose aim would be to "systematically review other macro and sectorial policies through a rural lens".
