Rural proofing - Unlocking the full potential of rural areas

Scope and objectives

On Friday 11 September, from 10:15 to 11:30 CEST, in line with its commitments to the Rural Pact, the European Economic and Social Committee will hold a debate on rural proofing during the next meeting of its Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment (NAT).

The discussion will bring together representatives from the European institutions, civil society and rural stakeholders to exchange experiences and perspectives on:

• how rural proofing can contribute to more territorially balanced policymaking and 
• ensuring that the impact of EU policies on rural areas is properly assessed and addressed.

The debate is organised in the context of the EESC's own-initiative opinion on rural proofing, which aims to strengthen the consideration of the specific needs and potential of rural areas across EU policies and initiatives.

Context 

The debate will include a presentation of the opinion by its rapporteur, Lidija Pavić-Rogošić, followed by contributions from representatives of the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht (Ireland), the European Parliament, the European Committee of the Regions, the European Rural Parliament and the European Commission (DG AGRI), as well as an exchange with NAT members.
