Gist of the Commission document
The news media and audiovisual industries have been deeply affected by the pandemic while online platforms have strengthened their market position, launched new services and attracted new audiences.
With this Communication, the Commission is setting out a comprehensive vision for the media sector for exploiting the potential of a true European media market and embracing the Digital Decade. The ambition of the Commission's Communication is to accelerate the recovery, transformation and resilience of the media industry and to tackle the structural challenges in the audiovisual and news media industries via actions implemented in close cooperation with Member States, the European Parliament, the media industry and all interested stakeholders. The Communication will constitute a concrete roadmap for media to reap benefits of digital transformation and foster its competitiveness.
The Communication builds on the revised Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) and Copyright reform and proposes further steps built around three blocks:
- Recover: provide liquidity and financial support;
- Transform: address structural issues to face the climate change and digitisation transitions;
- Enable and empower: innovate, ensure a level-playing field and empower citizens to access content and take informed decisions.
