The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.

Europskoj uniji potrebni su ambiciozni ekonomski ciljevi za jačanje eura. To je još važnije s obzirom na brzinu promjena u globalnom gospodarstvu i trenutačni položaj EU-a u pogledu inovacija, konkurentnosti i poticanja regulatornog okruženja povoljnog za ulaganja.
U mišljenju usvojenom na plenarnom zasjedanju u lipnju 2021. EGSO je pozdravio komunikaciju Europske komisije „Europski gospodarski i financijski sustav: poticanje otvorenosti, snage i otpornosti“. Budući da je postpandemijska transformacija dovela do značajnih promjena u odnosu gospodarskih snaga na svjetskoj razini, EU bi trebao brzo djelovati kako bi povećao gospodarsku otpornost Europe. Konkretno, Odbor se slaže s tim da je potrebno jačanje međunarodne uloge eura kao ključnog alata za poboljšanje globalnog položaja Europe.
Tomasz Wróblewski (Skupina I., poslodavci) bio je izvjestitelj za relevantno mišljenje EGSO-a. Smatra da bi se Komisija trebala više usredotočiti na razloge slabljenja međunarodne uloge eura. „Globalni položaj eura slabi, ali ne toliko brzo kao položaj dolara”, rekao je. „Međutim, na položaj eura utječu različiti čimbenici. Kao prvo, ne postoji integrirano zajedničko tržište za financijske usluge. Bez dovršene bankovne unije i unije tržišta kapitala bit će nam teško natjecati se s dolarom.“
EGSO također preporučuje da se veća pozornost posveti brzorastućem gospodarstvu Kine i poziva na izradu akcijskog plana kojim se to uzima u obzir. Uloga kineskog renminbija u međunarodnoj trgovini i poravnanju raste. Kina također intenzivno radi na svojoj digitalnoj valuti, dok ostatak svijeta u tome zaostaje. EU mora brzo reagirati, a EGSO podržava prijedlog o uvođenju digitalnog eura. „U tom području”, ističe g. Wróblewski, „Europa bi mogla ponuditi atraktivnija rješenja s obzirom na našu predanost zaštiti osobnih podataka i privatnosti korisnika”. (na)
