President Jahier criticised the EU Council's recent proposal to give national governments the power to veto a country's reform programmes under the package. In a debate with economy commissioner Paolo Gentiloni at the EESC plenary, Mr Jahier said the whole Committee stood behind the European Commission.

On July 8, theEuropean Economic and Social Committee (EESC) called for steps to speed up clinical trials that include genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Some vaccines under development are based on genetically modified viruses. Current EU legislation does not take into account the possibility of speeding up clinical trials in a public health emergency. The EESC therefore welcomes a temporary adjustment of EU rules.

The EESC is organising a virtual conference on "Health challenges in the EU in the pandemic context" on 31 March 2022 (9h30 to 17h30).
The aims of the conference will be to look into possible actions to exit the cross cutting crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, to prevent the next health threat from spiraling out of control, and to build stronger and more resilient health systems for the future.
The webinar will explore two inter-related questions: How has the COVID-19 crisis affected the mental health of young people in Europe and what has been the impact on their employability? It will be an informal and fully virtual event on Microsoft Teams in English only.

The integrity of the Single Market came under heavy pressure during the pandemic. The vast restrictions that Member States imposed at their borders lead to a patchwork of rules, the disruption of value chains and ultimately added to the severe challenges businesses were facing in the COVID19 pandemic. Now that the vaccination rollout is picking up speed, it is time to take a step back to evaluate how the crisis impacted the Single Market and how it can be a powerful resource for a stable economic recovery.
