Gist of the Commission document

5G networks are set to deliver an array of opportunities for Europe. Systemic and widespread disruption of 5G would have particularly serious consequences for many critical services on 5G networks. Given the interconnected nature of the digital ecosystems, it would have severe impacts beyond national borders. Neglecting cybersecurity would undermine the trust in the development of the digital economy and society. A coordinated and consistent approach to cybersecurity in the EU for critical technologies and networks is therefore essential for the EU to ensure its technological sovereignty, maintaining and developing industrial capacities.

Each Member State completed a national risk assessment of its 5G network infrastructures. The result of these assessments is a report on the EU Coordinated Risk Assessment on Cybersecurity in 5G Networks and the EU toolbox of risk mitigating measures addressing all the risks identified in the coordinated risk assessment report. The EU toolbox also identifies a set of key strategic and technical measures, as well as corresponding supporting actions to reinforce their effectiveness, to be implemented by all Member States and by the Commission.  The Commission will continue supporting the implementation of the EU approach on 5G cybersecurity in general, as well as taking specific initiatives in relation to measures and objectives of the toolbox where it can add value.
