Background

The development of the Union agricultural sector and of the common agricultural policy requires objective and relevant information on the performance and sustainability of the Union agricultural holdings.

The current Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) has been established in 2009, and recent studies have identified the need to enhance the collection of farm-level data to also collect data on environmental and social performance.

Therefore, the conversion into a Farm Sustainability Data Network (FSDN) was announced in the Farm to Fork Strategy, where next to the economic dimension, also the environmental and social ones are taken into account. The aim is to improve the sustainability of farmers, including their incomes, as well as to make food systems fairer, healthier and more environmentally and socially friendly, in line with the objectives of the common agricultural policy, the Green Deal and its farm to fork and biodiversity strategies.  With this new data collection, it will be possible to benchmark farm performance and give farmers tailored advice and guidance.

On June 22 2022, the Commission published its proposal for a Regulation for the conversion of the Farm Accountancy Data Network into a Farm Sustainability Data Network. The European Economic and Social Committee will provide an opinion on this proposal.
