Advertising / young people and children

EESC opinion: Advertising / young people and children

Key points:

  • Advertising which wrongfully uses children for purposes unrelated to matters which directly concern them is an affront to human dignity and to their physical and mental integrity should be banned.
  • It involves additional risks depending on the age-group involved, with harmful consequences for their physical, mental or moral health. The violent, racist, xenophobic, erotic or pornographic content of some advertising can have irreversible effects on children's physical, mental, moral and civic development. The EESC calls on all players to adopt and apply and enforce the highest levels of protection of children's rights. The Community legal framework does not meet current needs for protecting children's rights with regard to advertising messages.
