Summary
Digitalisation as a tool to support EU free movement and labour mobility has gained in importance. Digitalisation efforts in social security coordination have also created renewed attention for the role played by labour cards/social ID cards in ensuring fair labour mobility. Linked to the ongoing work on ESSPAS (European Social Security Pass which would help improve the portability of social security rights across borders through the digital verification of citizens’ social security coverage and entitlements by competent actors and institutions), the Commission will propose a Communication for the digitalisation of social security systems and social safety nets in support of labour mobility. This Communication will take stock of the currently available tools and initiatives with a view to ensuring synergies between them and set mid-term and long-term vision for the digitalisation strategy in EU social security coordination within the context of EU labour mobility.
