The EESC expresses concern about restrictions for civil society organisations in Egypt

Concerns for restrictions on civil society in Egypt

At the EESC plenary session of 26 October 2022, vice-president Cillian LOHAN stressed that the EESC was extremely concerned by the information that had been recently released by the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights indicating that there had been a new wave of repression by the Egyptian government, with arrests and detentions, NGO asset freezes and dissolutions and travel restrictions, which was clearly undermining the right to participate in public affairs.

The EESC hopes the Egyptian government will comply with its obligations under international human rights laws and allow civil society organisations to regularly and freely operate.
