Programme

As economic security establishes itself on top of the political agenda of major global actors, including the EU, the challenge ahead is how to integrate economic security within a sustainable framework. Trade policy should pursue resilience and security alongside long-term development and social justice for all partners.

PROGRAMME

12:30 – 13:45: Networking lunch

13:45 – 14:40:  Parallel workshops on labour and environmental developments on TSD

NB: no interpretation will be provided for the workshops

Workshop 1: Addressing the implementation of fundamental labour standards in the WTO (JDE 62)
Moderated by Ben Vanpeperstraete, Senior legal advisor, CNV Internationaal
Workshop 2: The environmental impact of FTAs: how can we know what we don't know? (JDE 60)
Moderated by Tanja Buzek, EESC TSD Rapporteur

Guaranteeing labour standards in international trade is key to promote decent jobs and help countries move up the value chain.

This workshop will build on lessons learnt from integrating labour standards into trade agreements and will explore the incorporation of labour rights into the WTO rulebook.

Over the past five years, the EU has pursued its environmental and climate objectives via an array of measures, not least its trade policy and particularly its FTAs.

This workshop takes an 'open-eyed' approach on how we can measure - or maybe cannot? - the impact of EU FTAs on key environmental aspects, including climate, using CETA as lab for critical reflection about tools, methods and results.

With the participation of:
- Jeffrey Vogt, Rule of Law Director of the Solidarity Center and member of the ILO Governing Body
- Dan Rees, Director, Priority Action Programme on Supply Chains, ILO

With the participation of:

- Yannick Beaudoin, Director, Climate Change and Nature-Positive Solutions, Alinea International
