Sustainable Democracy in Europe

The Civil Society Days 2019 will take place at a crucial moment for Europe, namely after the Sibiu Summit and the European elections and ahead of the constitution of the new European Parliament and European Commission.
Current pressures on our democratic systems are threatening fundamental values (respect for human rights, individual liberty, equality, the rule of law) and the civil society space within the European Union. The alarming consequence is an erosion of democracy and restricted civic space in several parts of the EU.
Against this backdrop and in consideration of the transformation processes the EU is facing, namely on economic, energy and ecological, social, and democratic and participatory level, this year's Civil Society Days will focus on two main pillars, Democracy and Sustainability, and will explore their links and interactions.

Crisis or not, we are now working in an open trading area, and in a globalised world. Europe will not build a sustainable society that is prosperous in the long term without the rest of the world. We need to share the same objectives even if we don't use the same tools.
As an open globalised economy we must TOGETHER identify and share good practices. It is in all our interests.
The role of entrepreneurs in channelling such investment for economic recovery is key to ensuring a competitive and dynamic economy. To make sure that this renewed economy is sustainable in the future, we must invest in education in entrepreneurship.
We must focus on untapped human capital. This mainly means young people, women, older workers, migrants and other vulnerable groups.

The European labour market is facing major challenges. We need to tackle the persisting economic and social crisis, and at the same time we are facing a huge demographic challenge. We have an ageing workforce and the number of people in "employment age" will decrease in the years to come.

Impact Study

The Labour Market Observatory carried out this study on youth employment in a selection of six member States: Austria, Croatia, Finland, Greece, Italy and Slovakia. This exercise gave national social partners and youth organisations an opportunity to put forward their comments and recommendations on topics such as the Youth guarantee, the transition from school to work, the traineeship and apprenticeship systems, the intra-EU mobility. Warm thanks for their commitment and contribution!

On 21 and 22 March 2019, 102 students and 36 teachers from all 28 EU Member States and the five EU candidate countries and from one Brussels-based European School, accompanied by three participants from previous YEYS events, met at the EESC in Brussels for Your Europe, Your Say! 2019.

This year, the title of the EESC's youth event was "YEYS turns 10: Vote for the future!", referring to the European elections on 23-26 May and to the fact that this year marks the event's tenth anniversary since it began in 2010.
