Background

In the framework of the ongoing efforts to remove Russian oil, gas and nuclear energy imports from the EU markets, the Commission intends to table a legislative proposal in early 2026 to ban oil imports from Russia as soon as possible, but not later than 2027. This initiative will complement the Regulation on phasing out Russian imports of both pipeline and liquified natural gas, formally adopted on the 26 January 2026.
