EU Delegates Bolster Ties with Scottish Civil Society in Edinburgh
The Scottish Advisory Forum on Europe (SAFE) and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) are pleased to have signed a Memorandum of Understanding today in Edinburgh. This marks a significant milestone in prioritising the continuation of efficient, positive and innovative relationships between Scotland and Europe.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between SAFE and the EESC identifies areas of common interest for cooperation and mutual support between Scotland’s civil society organisations and the EU. Cooperation and collaboration are expected to focus on a number of key issues that have emerged since Brexit, including youth and worker mobility, environmental cohesion, funding and research, trade and the post-Brexit impact on living standards and the availability of services.
The signing of the MOU comes as President Oliver Röpke of the EESC makes his official visit to Scotland on 9th November. The President and accompanying EESC delegation have plans to meet with several members of Government during the trip to Edinburgh.
Commenting, Irene Oldfather, Chair of SAFE said: “Today's signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between SAFE and the EESC is a cause for celebration.
“It represents a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to forging strong and meaningful relationships between Scotland and our European neighbours.
“This MOU is not just a piece of paper; it's a testament to our shared interests and a platform for robust cooperation and support between Scotland's civil society organisations and the EU.
“We are honoured to welcome President Oliver Röpke and the EESC delegation to Scotland on this historic occasion and we hope that this visit sends a message of hope for future.”
On his part, Oliver Röpke, President of the European Economic and Social Committee issued the following statement:
"The extensive scope of activities, the unwavering dedication of our members, and my presence here today all underscore the EESC's strong commitment to nurturing our relationship with the UK and Scotland. We are dedicated to learning from each other and are eager to cultivate and strengthen this friendship. Today's signing of our Memorandum of Understanding undoubtedly paves the way for our enhanced cooperation."
