How a sustainable and circular bioeconomy can shorten food supply chains to help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals in Europe

BACKGROUND

There are three main tasks that this study must fulfil:

  1. An analysis of the contribution that a sustainable and circular bioeconomy can provide to the development of shorter food supply chains, including its potential for agriculture and rural development in terms of jobs and investment that respect the capacity of Europe's existing ecosystems:
  • Provide a definition of a sustainable and circular bioeconomy,
  • Provide the link between a sustainable and circular bioeconomy and food supply chains,
  • Identify the contribution of a sustainable and circular bioeconomy to shortening food supply chains, and explain why food supply chains should be shortened,
  • Identify the potential for agriculture and rural development that a sustainable and circular bioeconomy can provide.
  1. The identification of the SDGs, including any sub-goals, that can be addressed through shortened food supply chains in Europe via a sustainable and circular bioeconomy.
  2. The identification of at least three good practices through a case study approach that could help to provide a basis for tailor-made bioeconomy and food strategies Europe-wide.
