Statement by the President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) congratulating President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris

In my capacity as President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), I extend my sincere congratulations to Mr. Joe Biden for his election as the 46th President of the United States of America, as well as to Ms. Kamala Harris as Vice-President.

The extraordinary turnout of the American people confirmed once again its profound attachment to the democratic principles we dearly cherish. Moreover, I welcome and support the message of unity, hope and reconciliation conveyed by the President-elect and the Vice President‑elect.

It is more important than ever to strengthen the strategic partnership and friendship between the United States and the European Union, based on our historically shared values of democracy, freedom and human rights. We therefore welcome the President-elect's announcement of the global Summit for Democracy to renew the spirit and shared purpose of the nations of the free world.

In a world faced with unprecedented challenges, both the European Union and the United States of America can greatly benefit from coordinated common responses. Together, we can be stronger in overcoming the Covid-19 crises, addressing climate change, making our economies thrive, nourishing democratic values and going the extra mile to ensure a more prosperous future for our citizens. Whilst acknowledging our respective differences, it seems of crucial importance to foster active multilateral discussions, including in established international infrastructures we have helped to build.

While reiterating our conviction that we should spare no effort to render stronger the bridges across the Atlantic, the European Economic and Social Committee will continue to work hard to connect our civil society organisations and social partners and make their voices heard.
