Am 8. Juli forderte der Europäische Wirtschafts- und Sozialausschuss (EWSA) Maßnahmen für eine raschere Durchführung klinischer Prüfungen unter Verwendung genetisch veränderter Organismen (GVO). Einige der in der Entwicklung begriffenen Impfstofftypen sind genbasiert. Die geltenden EU-Rechtsvorschriften über GVO sehen beschleunigte klinische Prüfungen in einer Gesundheitskrisensituation nicht vor. Der EWSA begrüßt daher eine vorübergehende Anpassung des EU‑Rechtsrahmens.

Am 1. Juli übergibt Kroatien den Staffelstab des EU-Ratsvorsitzes turnusmäßig an Deutschland, dem wohl seine bislang schwierigste Präsidentschaft bevorsteht, denn Europa durchlebt gerade seine größte Wirtschafts-, Gesellschafts- und Gesundheitskrise seiner jüngeren Geschichte.
