Background

The proposal consists of a set of rules designed to put in place a coherent system for GIs protecting the names of wines, spirit drinks and agricultural products having characteristics, attributes and reputation linked to their place of production. They provide notably for the rules for registration, both at national and Union level. The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) will provide technical assistance to the Commission as regards the scrutiny of applications. Procedural rules are also amended to give to EUIPO the tasks of administration of geographical indications.
