Aligning the food industry with the EU Green Deal's climate neutrality objectives and SDGs

Scope and objectives

On 10 December 2021, the Thematic Study Group on Sustainable Food Systems of the EESC will organise a public webinar, in cooperation with the INT Section, in the context of the new European Industrial Strategy announced by the European Commission on 5 May 2021.

As the new strategy defines agri-food as one of the key EU strategic ecosystems, the webinar aims to discuss how best to align the food industry with the European Green Deal's climate neutrality objectives and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This debate will be particularly relevant also in the context of the implementation of the Farm to Fork (F2F) strategy.

Based on the conclusions and recommendations of the EESC own-initiative opinion on this topic, the webinar will explore the following questions:

  • How can we better align food industry with the SDGs and stimulate sustainable food production, processing, and distribution across the chain?
  • What are the challenges faced by food industry in the path towards climate-neutrality and sustainability?
  • What solutions, tools, instruments and legislative initiatives are needed to support the role of the private sector in the transition towards sustainable, equitable and secure food systems?

Participants will be invited to join online and to interact via the platform.

Between June 2021 and March 2022 the European Economic and Social Committee is organising a series of events on the updated new industrial strategy, announced by the European Commission on 5 May 2021. The main objective of these events is to hear the view of civil society organisations on the future of European industry. Each event will focus on a specific aspect of the strategy from the role of critical raw materials to industry's role to achieve the Green Deal, from Europe's competitiveness on the global stage to a truly Just Transition and public & private investments.
