EESC explores role of civil society in Responsible Research & Innovation and the health industry

Innovative solutions that improve people's lives, platforms that better communicate these solutions, and address ethical, social and environmental issues are the pillars of responsible research and innovation (RRI). Today RRI is one of the answers to meet the needs arising from society for safer, more ethically acceptable and better quality health solutions. A conference held at the EESC on 18-19 May explored how civil society is involved in this process and how to make its contribution more effective.

Insolvency legislation should treat businesses as a social asset, says EESC

On 30 March 2017, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) adopted an opinion on the European Commission's proposed directive on business insolvency, which is intended to harmonise preventive restructuring procedures across Europe. While fully supporting the Commission's shift from liquidation to early restructuring in dealing with business insolvency, the EESC proposes a set of measures to help prevent its social damages.

New economy models and social innovation: an opportunity for a better Europe

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the New Economy and Social Innovation (NESI) Global Forum and the Global Hub for the Common Good have joined forces to enrich the European debate with input from communities directly involved in the collaborative, circular and functional economies.

 

On 16 February, the EESC brought together representatives from the public and private sectors to explore the opportunities the new economies present for the EU. Themed New Economy Models and Social Innovation: an opportunity for a better Europe, the event aimed to contribute towards the dialogue between the European Commission and civil society and to the shaping of EU legislation in these areas.

European society should transition from a throw-away culture toward a more sustainable, job-rich era

The EESC Plenary today highlighted the importance of the collaborative economy and the functional economy as new business models for a more sustainable Europe. But it also called on the Commission to ensure that the collaborative economy does not increase job insecurity and the opportunity for tax avoidance. Nudge thinking is one way to achieve this. The Committee debated a number of key issues affecting Europe's future economic development with Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen.

Social economy and social enterprises

"The key role of the social economy in responding to societal challenges is clear: in these times of economic crisis, the social economy sector has been extremely resilient, namely by creating jobs, especially because it is a sector where social innovation can express itself fully ", declared the EESC president at the opening of the conference on The Social Economy as a key player in providing effective answers to current societal challenges in the EU and the world.
